Let’s Learn What a Season Is
Read to Your Child
In Seasons Machine, Bing and Bong learn about the four seasons. They arrive on the Tiny Planet of Nature in winter, when it’s cold and snowy and they can slide down a hill. Bong runs ahead and finds a cold tree. He climbs up and cuddles with the tree to warm it up. Then Bing can’t get him out of the stiff, frozen tree.
In a nearby cave, Bing finds a seasons machine that’s not like anything we have on earth. When Bing pushes the Spring button on the Seasons Machine, the weather gets warmer, and the tree blooms with yellow flowers. When Bing pushes the Summer button, the tree grows fruit. In Fall, the tree drops its leaves and the weather gets colder. On earth, we have to wait a whole year for all four seasons to come and go!
You Will Learn ...
In this activity, your child will use stickers while telling a story. This can be a challenge because children are more used to real physical objects, like a play kitchen or dress-up toys. Telling stories with stickers is moving toward the tasks of reading (sequencing, using pictures as symbols of story telling, etc.). If they don’t seem ready, let it go for a while. It’s a time for free play and exploration, not lots of formal activities.
Parents
The concept of seasons is abstract, so for 4s we start with the season they are experiencing here and now. They will be noticing what the weather is like, what people wear, what they eat that’s special at this time of year, and what they enjoy doing.
Skills:
- What happens during a season
- What season we are having
- Telling a story
- Manipulating stickers in a scene
